Researching Surrealism

www.surrealism.org is a website dedicated to surrealists.

In my opinion Surrealism is the idea of having no rules of order or a means for understanding. It is a genre where you can do whatever you want whether it makes sense of not. It is the art of being random.

The surrealism movement began in the early 1920′s. It can be portrayed in art. music, photography, film, television, fashion, theatre and books.

Indefinate Divisibility by Yves Tanguy

Andre Breton who is famous for his surreal paintings and is also known as the principal founder of Surrealism. His most popular painting is of a man in a Bowler hat with an Apple for a face.

This scene is an idea of how we want our mood to be in our film: this is between the salt and pepper pots.

503 task: Representation

The Bourne Identity (Trailer)

The cinematography gives strong significant reprsentation of Jason Bourne. The slow motion movement instantly makes the audience assume he is the hero. His masculinity is enhanced and the voice over reinforces this, “he has the skills.” Our assumption of him is quickly changed when we come to realise he is being hunted. The series of shots that follow show Bourne smaller and more vulnerable for example when he is climbing up the wall, the camera is at a high angle looking down on him symbolising an eagle circling its prey.
Every action shot and fight scene within the trailer is occupied by male characters representing the gender ad tough. There are only two women within the trailer: Jason Bourne’s friend, Marie Kreutz, and a CIA operative, Nicky Parsons. Both women seem quite passive and show little action, Nicky Parsons has the more authorative role out of the women however does not occupy much time within the trailer therefore is still less significant to the males. Marie Kreutz is more active that Parsons however in one shot she resembles a damsel-in-distress when Bourne is protecting and directing her as they walk down the stairs. This shot instantly gives the male characters higher power as they are shown to have the responsibility to protect and control women.
