PRODUCTION LOG – 1/10/09

1st October 2009

In today’s lesson I was carrying on with pre-production tasks, this included Smart Targets, Research into similar products and Props List. For the Smart Targets we separated them into: Research, Production and Post-production these can be found on my blog.
In terms of research today I looked at similar products in relation to stop-motion animation. Fortunately I didn’t find anything too similar to our idea which will makes our video very original which is very good. Together we also produced our Prop’s list which states everything needed in production from the technical tools to actual prop’s that will be used in the shots. This helped us a lot because we feel more on track on terms of what we need to get and what we require to create our film.

RESEARCH: Stop-motion Examples – A Look into Similar Products

Stop-motion Examples

Here are some examples of similar products. So far we have found that our idea is unique. This is good because it shows how original our idea is; however it is also quite difficult because it’s hard to see similar videos in relation to target audience and how popular the idea is.

SMART Target’s cont’d

Research

A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animated or a combination of both, together with two of the following three options:

•  a poster for the film;

•  a radio trailer for the film;

•  a film magazine review page featuring the film.

S: Our Target is to complete a stop-motion animation including a film poster and a film magazine review page. We will research into this medium and look into audiences and institutions as well as how to create, edit and sell these particular stop motions. The animation must be 3-5 minutes long and consist of a clear narrative. Other aspects of production include planning and preparation, set design (mise-en-scene), shot composition, the animation itself and editing.

Research of the main animation

* Location

* Props

* Storyboard & Scripts

* Equipment (SLR Camera, lighting etc)

* Institution

* Audiences

M: The target is measurable as it has a physical measuring ability and we can see through hard evidence if we are progressing or not. By keeping a log we will be able to note and record the progression of the target and how far we have until the target has been reached.

A: We have agreed that this target is achievable and can be measured realistically.

R: Our target is very realistic as it is necessary for me to complete. If this target wasn’t realistic my coursework will not be able to be completed and will not have a good understanding of what to do. Due to the amount of time we have we believe that the target is realistic.

T: We have from September until March to complete this target although theoretically this target needs to be completely early on. The time boundaries are very wide therefore we have plenty of time to complete the target. we will be able to track my time management by progress logs etc.

Print Research.

S: Our target when researching into the print side of our course work is to gain and develop a good understanding of film magazines and how the review a film, layout the page and portray the film. We will also look at how film posters are created and what techniques they use to represent the film.

M: Our target will be measured by our extensive research and evidence on our blogs. When we can safely say we understand the conventions of a film magazine and poster and have the confidence to defy these conventions, this is when we measure our target.

A: We personally think that this target is achievable, as it is within reason and we already have a basic knowledge of magazine design and conventions.

R: This target is realistic as we have all the equipment and resources to gather the information we need to improve our knowledge.

T: We are going to allow our selves 3 weeks to complete our research, this seems like a fair amount of time to gain a good understanding of our needed area or interest.

SMART targets – Post-production

Post-production

A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animated or a combination of both, together with two of the following three options:

a poster for the film;

a radio trailer for the film;

a film magazine review page featuring the film.

S: Our Target is to edit our stop-motion animation including the film poster and magazine review page. We will have to edit so that our animation is of a length 3-5 minutes long that consist of a clear narrative. Other aspects of editing include music, photographs, basic photographic editing, opening titles and the paper-based aspects.

       Post-production of The main animation
    - Overall editing (continuity, length)
    - Themes (House-styles)
    - Music, sound effects
    - Basic editing of the paper-based mediums (air-brushing)

M: The target is measurable as it has a recordable progression and we can see through hard evidence if we are progressing or not. By keeping a log we will be able to note and record the post-production and how far we have until the target has been reached.

A: We have agreed that this target is achievable and can be measured realistically.

R: Our target is very realistic as it is necessary for us to complete. If this target wasn’t realistic our coursework will not be able to be completed. Due to the amount of time we have we belive that our target is realistic. Post-production is necessary to continue onto finalizing our courseowkr

T: We have from February until March to complete this target. The time boundaries aren’t very wide therefore we don’t have much time to complete the target; however we will be able to track our time management by progress logs etc.

Ideas for Advanced Portfolio

The first idea we have for the advanced portfolio project is a stop-motion animation. Our idea is about a romantic dinner for two; however the romance is between the objects on the table. Shots will include spaghetti strands twisting together, salt and pepper pots dancing, and glasses clinking.
As we don’t want it to look cheesy and over-exaggerated we have decided for it to be black and white and we want it to look slightly old-fashioned with a film-grain effect. Our first song choice for this idea is Frank Sinatra – The way you look tonight.

The second idea we have is more like a music video and is also a stop-motion animation. This idea is based on facial expressions. In the post-production stage we will add hand-drawn exaggerations of facial expressions and emotions. This is a very different idea from our first one and is more about the editing than the filming; whereas the first idea is more focused on the filming and capturing of footage.

‘PES’ is an example of an institution that specializes in stop-motion animation from using people to objects.

This is an example of a stop-motion film that has a narrative; however only uses still images and the frame rate is a lot slower than modern versions.
