Brief Notes on Se7en
Fincher uses the weather in ‘Se7en’ in conjunctions with the murders which creates a lot of atmosphere.
Low-key and restricted lighting such as spotlights and flash-lights is used a lot in the film.
Anonymity is a strong theme within this David Fincher film as well; although the murderer is anonymous a personality is still there which builds relationships between himself and the audience. This is shown with the character being named ‘John Doe’.
Torture and suffering is a very obvious theme.
Fincher combines home-life and recognizable situations with the unnatural theme of killing.
Telephones play a large role as they do with ‘Zodiac’. Again this relates to the anonymity.
Insanity vs Sanity
Single shot frame which plays as a memory or flashback and changes the mind of Mills – the single shot frame of Tracey.

Brief Notes on Zodiac
- Lots of juxtaposition between music and murder.
- There is an almost constant ringing of a phone throughout the film which could symbolise the mysteriousness to who is the ‘zodiac’: who is on the other side of the phone.
- The film arises questions and comparisons between murder vs normality, and insanity vs normality – when Dave asks the children witnesses what the suspect looked like they said ‘he looked normal’ Fincher explores the ‘fine line’ between normality and insanity
- Anonymity is a key theme as is with Se7en
